New wines from Luis Moya Tortosa

You know we are big fans of Luis' work. In just a few years, he has stood out for his knowledge and, above all, his deep understanding of the Basque wine region.
From his first vintage of garnacha, Masusta, of which this arrival marks the return in a pure and more fruit-forward form, to his newborns, the Gorobel and Cerro Amurdi Clarete vintages, Luis has continued in his quest to minimize his interventions to let the terroir express itself. All his plots are cultivated without synthetic herbicides or pesticides, and he minimizes the use of sulfur, of which he only adds infinitesimal quantities at bottling.

LMT Wines

The December arrival marks the return of rosé and white pet-nats. These vintages reflect the years of experience of the duo behind these wines wishing to obtain dry pet-nats. With no measurable residual sugar, these are two "bone-dry" wines, but with a very complex aromatic profile. Two exceptional natural wines with only 10 mg/L of free SO2.
We also have a few cases of the 100% Grenache vintages Kimera, Masusta and El Yesal. It's difficult to have more different Grenache expression profiles. Kimera, whose aging in a large terracotta tinaja gives it a unique profile, is a fruit bomb like always, with its expected spicy and floral notes. The Masusta vintage is a reboot of the much-loved wine. The same terraced plot planted more than 70 years ago produces fruit of impressive quality. Luis decided to modify the aging using only neutral barrels and the results are impressive. Having compared the 2021 (old, more woody profile) and 2022 vintages, I can confirm that Luis had an excellent idea.
As for the El Yesal vintage, it once again left us speechless. It is a monster of complexity and finesse elaborated from 100-year old garnacha vines. Those who read Luis Gutiérrez's reviews in the Wine Advocate know that he is an experienced taster and that he is not easily impressed. Its score of 94+ reflects the exceptional quality of this wine of which we have only a few cases.
This arrival marks the introduction of two new wines: Gorobel (txakoli from Bizkaia) made from 100% Hondarrabi Zuri and Cerro Amurdi Clarete. What is a txakoli? It's a traditional white wine made in the Basque Country, known for its freshness, good acidity, and for being very dry.
A "Clarete" is a traditional wine from northern Spain that looks like a rosé but is not really one... Clarete comes from the co-fermentation of red and white grape varieties and produces a complex and fruity wine . Unlike rosé which is fermented in the absence of skins (like a white wine), Clarete is fermented in the presence of skins like a red. Luis used a blend of 60% pinot noir, 30% garnatxa and 10% of a combination of verdejo, riesling and chardonnay. Another wine with a high evaporation coefficient... It’s so good and easy to drink!
