We discovered Luis when he was only producing two wines.
|
|
Beyond the fact that his portfolio has grown considerably (more than 12 wines), his recognition as a winemaker is now firmly established. Sommeliers at Michelin-starred restaurants in Spain are delighted to add El Yesal, Ostoki, Artaxo, Korteta, and La Tapada wines to their wine lists.
|
The lower mountains of Navarra offer a surprising diversity of terroir, and Luis' wines present an interesting range of profiles, reflecting this diversity.

Artaxo 2023

The 2023 Artaxo has great aromatic complexity and is layered, with ripe berry fruit, herbal hints and a smoky touch, spicy and with traces of cigar ash and perhaps a faint lactic twist. This is a blend of the best Garnacha lots from different vineyards. It was not produced in 2022 because of the smoke taint from the wildfires that year. In 2023, it added a new plot, in Eneriz, and also includes the usual Ostoki, La Tapada and El Yesal. It fermented with 50% full clusters in a soft and slow fermentation and matured in used 300- and 500-liter French oak barrels for 10 months. It has 14% alcohol with a low pH of 3.35 and 5.7 grams of acidity. It has a velvety palate with great elegance, balance and nuance and is fine-boned with chalky tannins and a stony sensation despite the juiciness. Delicious! 1,000 bottles produced. It was one of the 2023s bottled early. It was bottled in September 2023.

El Yesal 2023

The most spectacular nose of the wines I tasted this time was that of the 2023 El Yesal; it's high-pitched floral, with notes of translucent berry fruit and flowers, elegant, layered and nuanced. 2023 was not an easy vintage with 150 to 300 liters of rain just before the harvest, and Moya thinks this is a lighter year, which he's selling before 2022. He also changed the vinification here, using more full clusters and uncrushed grapes, and the result is stunning, perfumed, floral and elegant, with good ripeness and 13.9% alcohol. So, it's not a shy wine, and it has balanced parameters, with a pH of 3.5 and six grams of acidity. Super tasty and flashy. 1,200 bottles were filled in September 2024 after 10 months in two 500-liter barrels.

Korteta 2023

The 2023 Korteta was produced with 90% Garnacha and 5% each Moristel and Tempranillo from the zone of Valdizarbe in Navarra, basically a blend of what's not included in the Artaxo, Ostoki, La Tapada and El Yesal bottlings. It comes in at 14.3% alcohol, with a pH of 3.5 and 5.7 grams of acidity. It's medium- to full-bodied, with fine tannins and a long, tasty and clean finish. It matured mostly in used 500-liter barrels plus some 54-liter demijohns where he stored small quantities that were not enough to fill a barrel. 2,000 bottles were filled in June 2025.

Ostoki 2024

I love the ethereal nose of the 2024 Ostoki, the palest and most delicate of the range. The nose is a symphony of dried roses and cracked peppercorns that somehow transport me to the nose of some light reds from the Canary Islands. It shows the cool profile of the year, but it ripened well—he had to work hard, de-leafing to avoid botrytis and help the wines to ripen—and achieved 13% alcohol, keeping a pH of 3.6 and five grams of acidity. This comes from the zone of Pamplona, from a young, 13-year-old vineyard. It fermented with 100% full clusters and a short maceration and matured in tank with full the lees for 10 months. This is lovely! Only 800 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2025. This is sold without appellation of origin.

Kimera 2022

2022 was a challenging year, but the result is truly beautiful. The fruit bombshell is back. For those who have never discovered this wine, now's the time!
|
Imagine a terracotta pool for aging wine? Yes, that's the case here: a 4500L tinaja (amphora). The expression of the garnacha is unique, with floral notes and abundant fruit. A rare gem at this price. Like Luis' other wines, it is "without makeup" (his expression!). Pure juice with a touch of sulfur at bottling.

The primary still red 2022 Kimera Garnatxa was produced with the grapes from two vineyards in San Martín de Unx, one trellised and the other one head-pruned, both on terraces with clay, limestone and sandy soils, recovering the ancestral tradition to mature them in large (4,500-liter) old tinajas from La Mancha (amphora) where the wine spent 10 months with the lees. It has a very expressive nose and is ripe without excess at 14.40% alcohol, with a pH of 3.41 and 5.3 grams of acidity. It's juicy , straightforward and fruit-driven, with a chalky mouthfeel, fine tannins and a clean and fruit-driven finish. 6,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2024.

Proyecto Kimera is a joint venture between Luis Moya of LMT Wines and Gonzalo Celayeta, one of the leading winemakers in Navarra. They use grapes from the village of San Martín de Unx in different parajes.
