A trip to Rheinhessen
Rheinhessen is synonymous with bad memories (and throbbing headaches) for those who have drunk the "famous" Blue Nun wine.
|
The Liebfraumilch category —those bland, sugary wines of which Blue Nun became the standard-bearer— has done enormous damage to German wines in general, so much so that many (including some who read this newsletter) instinctively say, "I don't like German wines, they're too sweet!" Often, this aversion unfortunately extends to all Rieslings.
|
Imagine… 175 million bottles of Blue Nun were sold in 1984. That's enough to make the whole world sick!
|
Let's set the record straight: Rheinhessen is now one of the most dynamic wine regions in Germany and it has a lot to offer as young winemakers have taken over the reins for the past 30 years, making Rheinhessen one of Germany's most exciting wine regions. The wines produced there are incredibly diverse and of exceptional quality.
|
We are therefore delighted to partner with Weingut Müller-Oswald, the vineyard resulting from the union of Klara Mittrücker and Simon Müller-Oswald.
|
Klara comes from Siefersheim, where the soils are composed of porphyritic rock. These volcanic soils provide a cool, rocky environment that imparts a distinct, vibrant, and mineral character to the grapes. Having grown up at the Mittrücker estate, Klara learned to cultivate vines in this rugged and windswept landscape. This has shaped her personal winemaking style, which favors fresh and crisp white wines such as Riesling.

Simon grew up in Wahlheim, where the terroir is composed of fertile, heat-retaining limestone soils. These soils combine richness and concentration with a profound, crystalline elegance. They limit the vine's vigor and encourage deep root systems, giving the wines a smooth texture, vibrant acidity, and a characteristic mineral finish.

When Klara and Simon married, they didn't want their family traditions to disappear. So, they combined their heritages to found the Müller-Oswald estate. They created a "marriage of terroirs" by uniting two completely contrasting landscapes. In addition to valuing this soil diversity, and to preserve their unique styles, Klara and Simon vinify in two separate cellars!

Simon uses his own winemaking style in his cellar, and Klara her own techniques in hers. By combining their two estates, they have expanded their holdings to approximately 22 hectares.
|
